A box of OXVA cartridges bought on the strength of the brand name alone stands a fair chance of ending up at the back of a drawer. The manufacturer splits its OXVA pods into several families with similar names, XLIM, NeXLIM, VPRIME, ONEO and SLIMSTICK, and each one has its own format. We compare them on four criteria taken from OXVA’s product pages, compatible devices, capacity, coil values and the way they are filled.

OXVA pods, five cartridge families that do not mix

OXVA pods are the refillable cartridges used by the brand’s devices. You fill them yourself, the coil is built in, and the whole cartridge is replaced once it wears out. A cartridge fits the devices of its own family, not those of another.

We look at five families of refillable pods presented by OXVA. XLIM cartridges go in XLIM devices, NeXLIM cartridges in NeXLIM devices, VPRIME cartridges in both VPRIME models, while the ONEO and the SLIMSTICK X each take their own. The only documented bridge between two families is an adaptor that lets the first NeXLIM take XLIM cartridges, covered in our guide to the NeXLIM by OXVA.

Before ordering anything, the device name printed on the box is therefore the first thing to check, well ahead of the coil value.

OXVA pods at a glance, family by family

The table brings together the manufacturer’s figures for each family of OXVA pods. The standard capacity is that of the base model, while the TPD version is the 2 ml cartridge built for markets that cap tank size.

FamilyCompatible devicesStandardTPD versionCoilsFilling
XLIM (Top Fill and ABT)XLIM series, including XLIM 4 and XLIM PRO 43 ml2 ml0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.2 ohmTop

ONEOONEO3.5 ml2 ml0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 ohmSide
SLIMSTICK XSLIMSTICK X2 ml2 ml1.0 ohmTop

Four families out of five go beyond 2 ml in their standard form. UK rules cap refillable tanks and cartridges at 2 ml, so the TPD version, named after the EU Tobacco Products Directive on which the UK rules were first based, is the one a UK shop should be selling. OXVA notes on several product pages that capacity varies by region.

On a shop listing, the capacity shown is what tells you which version you are buying. The cartridge name, identical in both cases, does not settle it on its own.

OXVA pods for the XLIM, Top Fill or ABT

The XLIM family is the widest of the OXVA pods, and it is also the one where two cartridges share the same name. Their shape is the same, but how they behave depends on the device they go into.

The XLIM Top Fill cartridge, the reference of the series

The XLIM Top Fill cartridge, from the UNITECH 3.0 generation, fills from the top. It holds 3 ml, or 2 ml in its TPD version, and comes in 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.2 ohm. The XLIM 4, a 1600 mAh device with three power levels between 5 and 30 W, ships with the 0.8 ohm value, and OXVA lists it as compatible with the whole series.

Those four values cover two styles of draw. The higher the value, the more the cartridge leans towards mouth to lung, or MTL, where vapour is drawn into the mouth first. Lower values suit a restricted direct lung draw, or RDL, which is airier, as our explainer on MTL vaping in a pod sets out.

The ABT cartridge and its anti-burn protection

The XLIM PRO 4, with an 1800 mAh battery and a 5 to 30 W range, comes with the XLIM ABT cartridge. It keeps the UNITECH 3.0 generation, the 0.4 to 1.2 ohm values and the 3 ml or 2 ml capacity, and adds protection against dry firing.

The detail that matters sits in the manufacturer’s FAQ. The ABT cartridge works on other XLIM devices for normal use, but its protection only switches on with an ABT compatible device such as the XLIM PRO 4. Conversely, the XLIM PRO 4 accepts every XLIM cartridge, with standard Top Fill pods then running without that protection.

OXVA pods for the NeXLIM and VPRIME, the larger capacities

The next two families have a larger standard capacity than the XLIM, which makes the gap with their TPD version wider. Compatibility still stays inside each family.

NeXLIM, one cartridge for four devices

OXVA lists NeXLIM cartridges as compatible with the NeXLIM, NeXLIM Go, NeXLIM 2 and NeXLIM 2 Mini. They hold 4 ml as standard and 2 ml in the TPD version, fill from the top and come in 0.6, 0.8 and 1.2 ohm. Heating modes and the differences between generations are covered in our dedicated guide.

VPRIME and VPRIME 2, cross compatible cartridges

The original VPRIME, with 2600 mAh and a 5 to 60 W range, uses a 5 ml cartridge, or 2 ml in TPD form. It ships in 0.2 and 0.6 ohm, with stated compatibility from 0.2 to 0.8 ohm. The VPRIME 2 moves up to 3400 mAh and to a Dual Mesh cartridge, with two mesh strips, holding 6 ml (2 ml in TPD form) in 0.4 and 0.6 ohm.

The VPRIME 2 product page lists both cartridges as interchangeable, the VPRIME pod in the VPRIME 2 and the Dual Mesh pod in the VPRIME. Those low values and the 60 W ceiling place the family on direct lung vaping, at the opposite end from MTL.

ONEO and SLIMSTICK X, two stand-alone cartridges

Two devices have a cartridge of their own, with no family around it. They are also the two that stand furthest from the rest of the range, one for the way it fills, the other for its single capacity.

The ONEO and its side filling

The ONEO, a 1600 mAh device running from 5 to 40 W, is the only one of the five whose cartridge fills from the side. It holds 3.5 ml as standard and 2 ml in TPD form. OXVA supplies it in 0.4 and 0.8 ohm, with stated compatibility from 0.4 to 0.8 ohm.

Filling therefore works differently from a cap on top. A side stopper that is not pushed fully home is a classic cause of seepage, one of those listed in our article on pod leaking fixes.

The SLIMSTICK X, 2 ml from the start

The SLIMSTICK X, with a 1400 mAh battery, takes a single 2 ml refillable cartridge, identical in standard and TPD form, at 1.0 ohm. It fills from the top. OXVA recommends nicotine salts and publishes no power range for this device.

It is the only family where the question of which version you are buying does not arise, since the capacity is the same in every market.

Choosing OXVA pods by draw style

No product page names a best cartridge outright, but the figures point the choice of OXVA pods clearly according to the draw you are after.

For a first step into mouth to lung vaping, the XLIM Top Fill in 0.8 or 1.2 ohm on an XLIM 4 is the simplest way in, with the widest choice of values and compatible devices. The SLIMSTICK X, with its single value, suits anyone who would rather not adjust anything.

Anyone keen to limit the risk of a burnt taste will find that the XLIM PRO 4 paired with an ABT cartridge is the only combination where the protection works. For direct lung vaping at higher power, the VPRIME family is the only one of the five that reaches 60 W and goes down to 0.2 ohm. NeXLIM and ONEO sit between those two ends.

Our pick for most readers remains the XLIM family, for the depth of its range and the compatibility stated across the whole series.

FAQ

Five questions come up when ordering OXVA cartridges, about spare parts, liquid and compatibility. Here are the answers drawn from the manufacturer’s product pages.

Can you replace just the coil in an OXVA cartridge?

In two families, yes. OXVA lists an empty NeXLIM cartridge with replacement coils in 0.6, 0.8 and 1.2 ohm, and an empty 2 ml VPRIME cartridge with coils in 0.4 and 0.6 ohm. For the other three, the product pages list no replacement coil, so the whole cartridge is replaced.

Which e-liquid should go in an OXVA cartridge?

The manufacturer names nicotine salts and standard freebase nicotine for XLIM, NeXLIM, VPRIME and ONEO cartridges. The SLIMSTICK X is the exception, with a recommendation limited to nicotine salts. In the UK, nicotine e-liquid is capped at 20 mg/ml and sold in bottles of no more than 10 ml.

What does UNITECH 3.0 mean on a box of cartridges?

It is the name OXVA gives to the current generation of its cartridges, found on XLIM Top Fill, XLIM ABT and NeXLIM pods. The shared name creates no compatibility between families, and a UNITECH 3.0 NeXLIM pod remains a NeXLIM cartridge.

Will an OXVA cartridge fit a device from another brand?

OXVA’s product pages only list devices from its own range. When a retailer claims compatibility with another manufacturer, OXVA does not document it, so it is worth checking before buying.

When should an OXVA cartridge be replaced?

A flavour that fades or a burnt note usually means the coil is near the end of its life. With a built-in coil, the whole cartridge is then replaced, and a very sweet recipe tends to clog the wick sooner.

OXVA pods, what to check before ordering

The range reads by family. XLIM, NeXLIM and VPRIME group several devices around a shared cartridge, the ONEO and the SLIMSTICK X keep their own, and no cartridge crosses from one family to another without an adaptor.

Two checks then cover most mistakes. The device name gives you the family, and the capacity on the listing gives you the version, which should read 2 ml for a pod sold in the UK. Chosen that way, OXVA pods show what open pods ask in return for their freedom, a careful read of the consumable.
